The BCYC Scarweather Regatta is a 2-day event and part of the BCYC’s 150th Anniversary programme of celebrations.

The UHP Systems BCYC 150th Anniversary Scarweather Regatta was held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd August. In total, the regatta attracted 16 entries – larger than prestigious, local, events like the Shanghai Cup. 13 boats raced from Swansea to the Scarweather West Buoy and back on the Saturday. Conditions were very light, resulting in a 45 minute postponement for a gentle breeze to fill in. The light conditions meant that the bigger, faster boats couldn’t get away from the fleet with all boats within sight of each other at the Scarweather buoy and close racing to the finish. Molly, a Cork 1720, took line honours with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 10 seconds. The slowest boat was Sierra, a Tomahawk 25, with a time of 3 hours, 5 minutes and 25 seconds – a difference of around 40 minutes compared to over 4 hours last year! Once the handicap rating kicked in, Sierra, skippered by Roger Bayliss, was declared the winner. First BCYC boat went to Emelye Trew on Jigsaw.

The Sunday, short course racing, was run alongside Mumbles YC’s club racing, with several of Saturday’s crew and skippers opting to race their dinghies and catamarans. All in all 15 vessels, including 6 yachts, took to the water in more brisk conditions. Both Sunday races were won convincingly by Molly who, an aggregate, also took the weekend title of Scarweather Regatta Champion, and received his trophies from John Cuddy. First BCYC boat for the Regatta was Strike 3, skippered by Adrian Lester.

Following racing, crews and volunteers were treated to a splendid BBQ style meal at the Clubhouse which was buzzing with tall tales of on the water activity, chances missed and chances gained.
