We’ve reached the halfway point of the BCYC 2026 Summer Series -a series that has already seen lead changes and challenges.
Summer 1 and 2 took place on 31st May. Tomfoolery, a Sigma 362 skippered by Leonardo Marrotta, was victorious in both races, hence jumping to the head of the leaderboard. Kokomo, Chris Regnart, was a solid 2nd with Jigsaw, skippered by Paul Knight but helmed by BCYC’s Paul Nicholson, and Variation, Ben Herbert, finishing in equal 3rd place.
Last weekend, whilst we were blessed with sunshine and a picture-perfect Bay, we had very little wind. After a short delay racing got underway with skippers being ever challenged to find the breeze. Molly, a Cork 1720 skippered by Grham Porter, was victorious in both races – indeed he was the only yacht to complete race 4 as the breeze dropped and the tide took control. Strike 3, Adrian Lester finished race 3 in 2nd place followed by Variation, Ben Herbert.
As is often quoted, consistency is key. Frequent “podium” finishes for Variation now has her topping the leaderboard, followed by Molly and Tomfoolery.
Race 5 is scheduled for Saturday 27th June, with an 11:00 start, and is a “double whammy”. Yachts will race from Mumbles to Ilfracombe, with the race counting for both the Summer and Coastal series. The start line will be between the Clubhouse and a buoy roughly a kilometre from the shore.
In addition to the racing, members, guests and sailors have been treated to Sailaway Sundays including themed menus and cocktails, entertainment and convivial company. Our next Sailaway Sunday, which will be Pacific themed, is on 19th July and coincides with Summer Series Race 6 and the RNLI Raft race. It promises to be a great day!
