BCYC Scarweather Race 2024

This year we have run 2 races. We reinstated the Scarweather Cup which hasn’t been raced for in many years. The race took place on 30th June in a mix of sun, cloud and showers – typical summer’s day. The wind was lighter than forecast but the sea state a little more challenging. 10 yachts entered and raced from the Mid fairway buoys to Scarweather and back via SWIGG to a finish line just opposite the Club.  Some of the racing was quite fierce with 3 yachts all in sight of the finish line. Line honours went to Graham Porter on a Cork 1720 with George Pettifor less than a minute behind him, also on a Cork 1720. While these 2 were match racing to the finish line, Oscar Chess on Aurora, was rounding SWIGG and enjoying the action. He enjoyed it even more once the handicap kicked in and he was crowned winner of the race.

The slower boats faired less well as by the time they reached the Scarweather buoy, the tide had turned resulting in them having a long punch back to the Bay some 3 hours behind the lead boats.

I’d like to thank Geoff Cottle and Tony Pettican from ANCHEM for sponsoring the event. Thanks to their generosity we were able to buy a range of prizes and have a post race BBQ at SYSAC.
